Loc'd Hair Care
For lasting, healthy locs we recommend the following:
• Drink lots of water. We recommend our clients use a 'water intake calculator' to determine how much water you should consume based on your BMI (body mass index) and your daily activities and diet. https://www.trifectanutrition.com/water-intake-calculator.
• We DO NOT advise of spraying your locs with water. Drinking the water has more of evident impact on the health of your locs.
• If locs are serviced regularly (once a month) there is no need for additional oiling of scalp.
• It is recommended that you DO NOT retwist your locs more than once a month to eliminate possible thinning of roots.
• We also DO NOT recommend oiling your scalp more than once a week as this may cause dandruff.
• No style at all should last over 2 months. The hygiene and health of the scalp and hair are at risk. In addition too the locs joining together as the new growth comes in.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does my hair have to be in order to get locs?
It's best if your hair is at least 3 inches long from root to tip.
Why does my hair have to be a certain length to get locs?
The shorter your hair is when you start your locs, is the smaller the root of the loc would have to be when starting your locs. Because the locs then is started smaller in size, the root becomes extremely thin as your locs grows longer.
My hair isn't quite that length but I really don't want to wait for it to grow. Can I still get locs?
The best option for you if your hair is at least 3 inches and under 8 inches is to start your locs with loc extensions.
Can I wash my locs?
Yes, but it's best not to shampoo or wet your locs for the first 2-4 weeks when they're fresh to avoid the 'fuzzies', however if they get dirty in this time, you can rinse them in the shower with just water.
After the first month, it's best to wash locs when they are literally dirty, but they don't ever need as much washing as normal hair. Once a week to once a month is good. Only use a 100% natural shampoo (as chemical shampoos contain agents that can fuzz up &/or soften your locs), then pat dry with a towel or use air and sun (it's best not to rub them with a towel as this can pull hairs out and create the fuzzy look).
What type of shampoo is best to use on my locs?
You can avoid using expensive locs shampoos as some work well and others don't. It is best to use a 100% natural chemical, residue free shampoo made from herbs, etc.
I've seen photos of some locs where you can see the scalp. Will I look scalpy?
All new locs show the scalp a little as they've been freshly sectioned. It's the same as when someone gets their hair done in braids. Some of your scalp shows because the hair is pulled tight to the scalp when they're fresh. Only someone standing over you and looking down head will see it and after about 3 weeks, your new locs relax a bit, you won't see the scalp anymore. If you prefer the relaxed look straight away, just ask your Loctician to make the bases a bit looser.
I have heard stories that locs are dirty and sometimes insects can get in them. Is there any truth in that or is it just an urban myth?
Everyone's personal level of hygiene is different. All you have to do to keep your locs clean, wash them!
